hazards of swimming naked with special guests

hazards of swimming naked are a Brisbane based, 5-piece instrumental band originating from Queensland's tropical far north. The humidity and vibrancy of that region permeates their music and culminates in a sound which shares all the cinematic grandeur of artists such as Mogwai, godspeed you black emperor and Mono. Returning to the live scene after their support of Sweden's Katatonia at the Triffid earlier this year; hazards take over The Bearded Lady in West End, Brisbane with their signature intertwining guitar melodies, Saturday May 18, playing a headlining length set.

hazards of swimming naked will be supported by Echotide, who are launching a new single and returning to the live scene after a long hibernation. With a new album releasing later this year, and their new single "All Frequencies Wide Open" showcasing their slow-burn, reverb-drenched sound, Echotide live are an cinematic/post rock four piece with a dynamic sound ranging from delicate and introspective ambience to an all-encompassing wall of sound.

Featuring on the night will be Gold Coast based post rock group the sea shall not have them, a dynamic, instrumental two piece with an appetite for glorious noise that you can swim in. The group are fresh from a blistering run of 2023 shows alongside Mono, Shihad, Magic Dirt, Astrodeath and many others.

Also joining the lineup is Brisbane based neo-noir collective Ghostwoods in quartet mode, joined by special guest Mia Goodwin, playing their simmering brand of introspective, cinematic, atmospheric music that engages the senses.

RA! pres. The Native Cats [TAS] w/ Scraps + Lunar Dirt + Lilith at The Bearded Lady

Roused At! Presents:
THE NATIVE CATS [TAS] live @ The Bearded Lady
w/ local guests: S>C>R>A>P>S + Lunar Dirt + Lilith

------------------------------

Hobart/Nipaluna post-punk act The Native Cats released their fifth album, The Way On Is the Way Off, in November 2023 through Melbourne/Naarm indie label Chapter Music. They will be embarking on a long-overdue trip up to Meanjin from Nipaluna for the first time since 2018 in celebration.

The band’s five-album discography is an idiosyncratic body of work, distinguished by Escott’s speak-singing lead vocals and Teakle’s always-urgent bass playing. Ahead of a national album launch tour, Music Feeds speaks to Escott about The Way On Is the Way Off and the pair’s creative bond.

Listen: https://thenativecats.bandcamp.com/music

Formed around 2007, Julian (bass) had been recording some four track instrumentals in the closing days of his previous band the Bad Luck Charms, and suggested to Chloe Escott, who was a solo artist who had played with BLC several times, that it could be interesting to collaborate on these ideas. They played their first show in January 2008, eschewing a lot of the live instrumentation of previous ventures, stripping it down to vocals, melodica, bass guitar and a rhythmic/synthy backing track, which was then replaced by various drum machines and most importantly, a Nintendo DS with a Korg MS-10 synth emulator, powerful and diverse sounds that could be carried in a hoodie pocket.

The first album Always On was recorded pretty soon after the first shows and released early 2009 on Hobart label Consumer Productions. The album found instant fans locally, and later internationally which led to a standalone 7" single on Philadelphia's White Denim label, and then the album getting reissued on vinyl by Boston's Ride The Snake Records, which then was followed by the Process Praise album in 2011, again on Ride The Snake. Through this the 'Cats were playing locally in Hobart heaps, making tentative treks to mainland cities, and in 2012 were asked to play Gonerfest in Memphis, so the band organised a 13 show USA tour around the festival date. After they returned to Australia they recorded the Dallas album, which came out on Sydney's RIP Society in 2013, which led to shows at the Sydney Opera House for the LIVID Festival.

The band have also been regular performers in their home town's MONA FOMA and Dark MOFO festivals. In 2018 their fourth album John Sharp Toro came out on RIP Society, making album of the week on RRR and Edge Radio. The band finished the year with another 7" Spiro Scratch on Rough Skies Records and a slot at the legendary Meredith Music Festival. 2020 started with another 7" Two Creation Myths, and plans for a big year, snuffed out by the pandemic. The Way On Is the Way Off marks a rock-solid return to form & subsequent transcendence of that form.

DAVE GRANEY & CLARE MOORE – NEW ALBUM (strangely)(emotional) Brisbane

DAVE GRANEY &CLARE MOORE – NEW ALBUM - (strangely)(emotional)

“As I have said many times nobody else is making music like this. A combination of

the familiar tropes of rock and pop intermingled with literary lyrical explorations, jazz

elements, ambient sounds, and a degree of abstraction masking astute commentary

on the state of the world today. There are more ideas in these 15 songs than most

artists achieve in their careers”.

Bob Osborne – DIFFERENT NOISES – Salford UK

Dave Graney and Clare Moore have in recent years been swinging between song focused studio albums (like this one) and more band focused rock albums, (like their previous set In A Mistly).(strangely)(emotional) is so carefully titled because that’s the age we live in. A person has to be sure and careful of their words. It’s a sensitive area, the world, in 2024. Even though it is also brutal , viral and violent all at once. (The ground we walk upon is contested and just holding together with surface tension). So the words are quarantined from each other, in parentheses so as not to be qualifying or commenting on the other.

The sounds on the album come from vintage drum machines, electric (six and twelve string) and acoustic (nylon and steel string) guitars, pedal steel, harp, harmonica, electric piano, drums, vibes, marimba, mellotron and tenor and soprano sax. The words are rich, playful and very personal. Dave Graney is a proud Creative Creep. (strangely)(emotional) comes after a year where Graney and Moore toured the country to joy and acclaim with their 90s band Dave Graney and the Coral Snakes. This album was cooking away in the background all the while.

It’s a Dave Graney and Clare Moore album. They’ve always done their own thing. This time, it’s (strangely)(emotional) “Last night (Sat) at the Great Club in Sydney & Marrickville, a rolling triumph. Dave, solo and acoustic with brand new songs, a brace of wistful glances back at childhood, fam and hometown, and not quite like anything that has come before from this extraordinary maker of sonic stories. Then more with lifetime offsider and partner of all labours CLARE MOORE, multi-instrumentaling it on melodica then piano before making those drums sing and wail like few can. And then a & power trio & as Dave described it, and it was, with the mid-set appearance of a local (Sydney) bassplayer, Gregory Thorsby, who knocked everyone flat with jazz and funk stylings that would not have been out of place in Weather Report, Sly And The Family Stone or the classic Miles Davis rosary of albums from 1967-74.

This, a perfect reinvention of all the diamonds from the vast Graney-Moore back catalogue. All this and Traumatic Shit, & a kind of talking blues that gave Derek And Clive a run for their money. We split our britches laughing, I tells ya. Yea, among the two sets of wonder and stardust, personal faves like, 'That Old Swagger', 'Wilco Got No Wilco,' Night Of The . 'Wolverineuberclassic', 'You'reJUst Too Hip, Baby', and an encore featuring a mighty Ronsonesque wigout guitar solo that took off the tops of our heads. The new album ( strangely) (emotional)is out in April. All I can say is GET IN”.
