Honk is an ensemble formed in recognition and memory of the chordless, bop and hard-bop ensembles heard in the records of Chris Byars’ “Boptics”, Sonny Rollins’ “Way Out West” and Walter Smith's "TWIO".
After a short trip to NYC in 2023 and a chance encounter with Chris Byars, the ensemble's leader, Chris James, has been experimenting with the harmonic and melodic freedom that a chordless layout affords. Joining him on stage is Alyssa Sinclair (Trp), (Tn sax), Mason Harvey (Bari sax), Alex Askew (Bass) and Evan Evans (Drums).
